As part of Month of the Military Child festivities, military families and their children participated in the Colorful Cupcake event at the Admiral Boorda Center on Naval Base Kitsap Bangor, April 12.

The free event invited teens, grades 7-12, and military families to make colorful cupcakes baked in eggshells. The event was sponsored by the Boys and Girls Club and the Fleet and Family Support Center.

“It’s important that we give military children recognition,” said Heidi Michalski, child and youth program assistant at the Admiral Boorda Center. “It can be hard being a military child and the youth center is a safe place for them to come and be themselves.”

The Month of the Military Child and Child Abuse Prevention Month is a time set aside each April to recognize the special sacrifices children make as part of a military family and to take action in preventing child abuse.

“The youth center gives children a place to come to meet other kids who are going through the same things,” said Kelly Scheese, assistant training and curriculum specialist at the Admiral Boorda Center. “It can be difficult for kids who have parents going through deployments and this month helps recognize them.”

Military children make up a very special part of our nations population. Although young, these brave sons and daughters stand in steadfast support of their military parents through permanent change of station moves and deployments. To honor their unique contributions and sacrifices on behalf of the country, each April is designated the month of the military child.

“The youth center is a fun place to hang out where everyone gets along,” said Alex Smith, a regular visitor at the youth center.

There are many events going on around NBK this month in celebration of month of the military child including family movie night, parent & tot yoga, warrior cadet workout, children’s story hour, spring flowers and gardening, and kids bowling specials.
