SILVERDALE, Wash. – Naval Base Kitsap Bangor’s Trident Inn Galley was announced as the winner of the 2013 Navy Captain Edward F. Ney Memorial Award for outstanding food service earlier this year, and in recognition of this achievement, the culinary specialists (CS) received additional education and training from Gene Leiterman, a pastry arts instructor July 8-12.
Leiterman, from Platt College in Moore, Okla., said there is no doubt in his mind why the CSs at Trident Inn were recognized with the Ney Award.
“I applied to the Adopted-a-Ship program just five weeks ago,” said Leiterman. “This is my first time working with the military and to see the drive and efforts of these young people is truly impressive.”
Over the week-long course, the galley CSs received hands on training as well as the opportunity to ask questions of the college instructor to help improve their abilities.
“What Chef Leiterman has been showing us is more than just how to properly prepare dough or measure out the right amount of salt,” said Culinary Specialist 2nd Class Timothy Edwards. “He is teaching us how to be better at our craft, and I for one plan to use these skills beyond this command, throughout the rest of my career in the Navy.”
Among the lessons they received, the CSs were taught how to prepare multiple recipes and baking techniques offered only by Platt College culinary courses.
“I was a little worried at first, wondering if they were going to be willing to learn, wanting to do things outside what they normally do,” said Leiterman. “But I’ve seen a fire in all of them. They have a passion for food and want to serve the very best.”
The Captain Edward F. Ney Award for food service excellence was established in 1958 and is given to galleys which earn a five-star rating. The award was designed to improve food service operations and recognize the best general messes in the Navy.
“The quality of the food directly comes from the skill and professionalism of the CSs staffed here,” said Chief Culinary Specialist Kevin Flatley. “Being named the 2013 Ney winners and having chef Leiterman come out shows my junior Sailors that their hard work and dedication is appreciated.”
