Applications to ride on a U.S. Navy ship at Seafair Fleet Week extended to July 17

SEATTLE, Wash. – As part of Fleet Week during this year’s Seafair, Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) is hosting a guest cruise aboard a U.S. Navy vessel Wednesday, July 30.

Applications are being accepted online through July 17, 2014. Application forms, along with guest cruise policies and procedures can be found online at http://www.shipriders.com.

The guest cruise is open to all U.S. citizens, eight years of age and older. The cruise will depart from the Seattle waterfront and may last from six to eight hours, including boarding and disembarking.

Cost for this exciting day at sea is $20 and includes lunch on board the ship as it cruises around Puget Sound. The service charge of $20 is necessary to cover some expenses, including lunch on the ship.

Transportation to and from the departure point is not included, and nearby parking is limited so public transportation is recommended. Space is limited on guest cruises, so all applications received will be processed at random.

Ships hosting previous Seafair guest cruises have included destroyers, frigates, cutters, an amphibious assault ship and hospital ships. This year, the plan is to host the guest cruise on USS Essex (LHD 2).

Also during Fleet Week, Navy personnel plan to host shorter pier-side tours of their ships July 31 through Aug. 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Times for tours may vary by ship, from day-to-day. More information will be released on exact times for each day as Fleet Week grows closer. These pier-side tours are free and open to the public on a first-come, first-serve basis.
