CREDO Northwest Hosts Team Building Workshop

POULSBO, Wash. (NNS) — Chaplain Religious Enrichment Development Operation (CREDO) Navy Region Northwest sponsored Transient Personnel Unit (TPU) Puget Sound during a unit cohesion pilot program at Island Lake Camp, Sept. 9.

TPU is the first command to participate in the program, which CREDO NRNW plans to host recreational days where commands participate in teamwork and trust exercises in a non-military environment.

The program is designed for a capacity ranging from 40-80 Sailors, according to Lt. Kevin Wilkinson, an Abilene, Texas, native assigned to CREDO.

“While many individuals relate CREDO to marriage retreats, this program shows that we intend to reach to every demographic of Sailor,” said Wilkinson. “CREDO is for everybody.”

“These confidence building and resilience trust exercises help to strengthen our warfighters,” said Wilkinson.

The program provides an informal environment for Sailors to focus on teamwork, communication and trust where they participated in events to include paintball and a high rope obstacle course.

“Being on the commanding officer’s paintball team helped to see his leadership style applied in a different outlet,” said Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Zachary Duvall, a Vancouver, Wash., native. “He took charge as expected, but the first thing he said was ‘How do you guys think we should approach this?’”

“Being exposed to my leadership in a much different setting helps me to appreciate their style of leadership,” said Duvall.

The change in setting and focus on key elements to operational success brought Sailors to a deeper bond.

“The more you get to know people, the more you can trust them,” said Senior Chief Mineman Jay Auman, a Society Hill, S.C. native and Command Senior Chief of TPU. “No one will be just someone I work with down the hall since we’re closer now.”

The Sailors shared their experiences over lunch, and a debrief at the end of the day’s events helped the Sailors to focus on their improved unit cohesion.

“Having been the first Sailors exposed to this program, I can say that we firmly stand behind it,” said Lt. Cmdr. Robert Moran, a Winterhaven, Fla., native and commanding officer of TPU. “This is a great way to decompress form the normal military working environment while focusing on communication, trust and team building.”
