BREMERTON, Wash. (NNS) – Twenty-three service members representing commands across Navy Region Northwest wrestled at Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton’s Concourse West Fitness & Aquatics Center for a slot in the 2015 All Navy Wrestling Mini Camp, Nov 13.

The wrestlers showcased their freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling skills from the neutral, top and bottom positions against opponents of similar sizes for Rob Hermann, head coach of Greco-Roman wrestling at Northern Michigan University, and who served as a scout for All Navy Sports during the tryout.

“I want to see who wants to be here, not just a piece of paper,” said Hermann, who has served as the All Navy Wrestling head coach from 1983-2010.

Hermann kept a fast pace throughout the trials by not allowing more than a minute in each position while assessing everything from a wrestler’s techniques to his positioning while applying those techniques.

“Don’t come on to the mats to dance,” said Hermann during an introduction before the trials. “Show me what you’ve got and do your go-to moves.”

Nine wrestlers were selected and encouraged to submit applications, with approval from the service member’s chain-of-command.

“This was my second year impressing the scouts,” said Sonar Technician (Submarines) 3rd Class Anthony Feller, a Grand Junction, Colo. native assigned to Naval Submarine Support Center-Bangor. “Unfortunately I could not make last year’s camp due to operational commitments, but this is a passion of mine so I’ll keep at it.”

The camp is five weeks long, split between Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling and slated to begin in February, which will take place at Northern Michigan University.

“We have the world to learn from each other and the team out there,” said U.S. Coast Guard Boatswain’s Mate 3rd Class Daniel Mazzei, a Hagerstown, Md. native who made the team last year.

The most recent Olympian who passed through the Navy wrestling team was Adam Wheeler, a former Coast Guardsman who earned a bronze medal in the Greco-Roman wrestling at the 2008 Summer Olympics.

“Navy wrestling is not an intramural sport,” said Hermann. “You’re going to compete against the elite of the Armed Forces.”
