MANCHESTER, Wash. (June 19, 2017) NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center (FLC) Puget sound hosted Washington’s newest ferry, M/V Chimacum, for a “Fit Test” exercise at Manchester Fuel Depot (MFD).
The purpose of the exercise was to see if the fuel pier could accommodate the ferry and safely deliver fuel. The fit test allowed technicians to evaluate the equipment and systems aboard the Chimacum and at the pier to determine if there is any unique equipment or procedural requirements that need to be addressed in order for WSDOT vessels to obtain fuel during an emergency.
The exercise is an initial step toward establishing a formal agreement between Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center Puget Sound to provide fuel support for ferries if needed during a natural disaster response. If the land transportation infrastructure is damaged following a major earthquake, responders can use maritime resources such as WSDOT ferries to provide aid and assistance to areas that would otherwise be inaccessible.
The Manchester Fuel Depot is in a unique position to support the fuel needs of WSDOT ferries in the event that the normal WSDOT fuel supply facilities are unusable.
