PORT HADLOCK, Wash. — Naval Magazine Indian Island (NAVMAG) is participating in a Command Assessment Readiness for Training (CART) Exercise April 2-6. The exercise is conducted onboard Indian Island and Port Townsend Bay near the Installation’s Port Security Barrier.

Measures have been taken to minimize disruptions to the community and normal base operations, but there may be times when the exercise causes increased traffic around the installation or delays in gaining installation access.

This field training exercise uses realistic scenarios to ensure Navy security forces maintain a high level of readiness to respond to changing and dynamic threats. Area residents may see or hear activities associated with the exercise such as simulated shooter attacks and activated emergency response vehicles.

The training at NAVMAG includes shooting blank rounds, simulating gunfire, and a heightened law enforcement presence at the installation’s waterfront. Advanced coordination has taken place with local law enforcement and first responders. Local residents and boaters may hear blank gunfire April 4-5.

The exercises are anti-terrorism/force protection exercises conducted by Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) on all continental Navy installations within an assessment cycle.

The exercise is designed to ensure peak readiness of Navy security forces and seamless interoperability among the commands, other services, and agency partners. The exercises are not in response to any specific threat.

“NAVMAG is committed to maintaining a high level of readiness and coordination with mutual aid partners and first responders,” said Cmdr. Rocky Pulley, NAVMAG’s Commanding Officer. “Ensuring the safety of Navy equipment, and more importantly, service members, families, Navy civilians, and contractors is a top priority.”
